Introduction
What if becoming an expat partner in Paris was not only about following someone else’s career, but also about rediscovering your own path? For Stefan Schönmeier, moving to Paris meant facing a new language, a new rhythm, and a new professional chapter. But through curiosity, courage, and the support of Absolutely French, his expatriation became more than an adaptation story. It became a journey of confidence, connection, and personal growth.
If Stefan’s story resonates with you, two other articles can help you go further. On Absolutely French, Bonjour to Confidence: Learning French for Career Growth explores how learning French can become a bridge to self-confidence, professional opportunities, and daily integration in Paris. On Absolutely Talented, Talent Without Borders: How to Pitch Yourself in a Global Job Market shows how international experiences and career changes can become powerful assets when you learn how to tell your story with clarity and confidence. Together, these articles remind us that being an expat partner is not a pause. It can be the beginning of a new transformation.

1. Can you tell us about yourself and your expatriation journey to Paris?
I’m Stefan, an expat from Germany. I moved to Paris to accompany my wife, who was offered a fantastic professional opportunity. The decision to move was made quickly, and because of the upcoming Olympic Games, we had very little time to organize everything. Moving our whole family, including our two young kids, in such a short period was an intense challenge.
Looking back, this moment really marked my expat journey. It was fast, sometimes overwhelming, but it also pushed me to adapt quickly and embrace the unexpected.
When we first arrived in France, I was genuinely surprised by how rule-driven French society is. Sometimes, things are even more structured than expected, which was a big adjustment for me as a newcomer. Like many expats, I realized early on that navigating life in France means learning to understand and respect these systems.
2. What are your natural talents or passions — the things that truly energize you?
What energizes me the most is connecting with people and discovering different perspectives, both in personal conversations and professional settings. As an expat, these interactions are not just enjoyable, they are essential. They help you build your network, understand new cultures, and create a sense of belonging in a foreign environment.
3. Are you currently working on a personal or professional project that matters to you?
Yes, I’m currently focused on changing my career path. Moving to France as an expat gave me the perfect opportunity to rethink my professional goals. I’m working towards aligning my future career with my natural strengths and what truly motivates me.
I’ve realized that focusing on my strengths instead of obsessing over areas of improvement is key to building a satisfying and sustainable expat life. It’s a mindset shift that is making a real difference in how I see myself and my future.
4. What are your ambitions for the future in France or beyond?
My ambition is to fully embrace this expat experience by focusing on personal growth and playing to my strengths. Whether I stay in France or explore other opportunities abroad, I want to keep building on what energizes me and leave behind the habit of constantly chasing improvement zones. I believe this attitude will allow me to thrive both personally and professionally.
5. What were the biggest challenges you faced when settling in France?
For me, the most challenging part was dealing with the complexity of French rules and systems. I was surprised by how regulated everyday life is here, sometimes more than you would expect coming from Germany. On top of that, organizing a cross-border move in such a short time with two young children was definitely not an easy task. It’s something many expat families can relate to.
6. How has Absolutely French helped you integrate?
Absolutely French has been a game-changer in my expat integration. What I particularly loved was meeting other expat partners from different countries who are living similar experiences. These connections made me feel part of a real community.
Absolutely French helped me not only improve my French but also experience the city in a very practical and lively way. This is essential for any expat who wants to truly settle in.
7. What’s your favorite activity at Absolutely French and why?
My favorite activity, without hesitation, is the Stroll and Learn sessions. Walking around Paris while practicing French brings the language to life. It’s not just about sitting in a classroom. You experience the city, you interact, you learn in real situations. For an expat, this hands-on approach is simply the best way to integrate.

8. If you could give one piece of advice to a new Absolutely French student, what would it be?
If you’re starting your expat journey, my advice is simple. Start enjoying your special situation right away. Don’t wait until you feel ready. Go out, explore, meet people. Expat life is a unique opportunity, so allow yourself to enjoy it fully from day one.
9. Do you have a favorite French word and why?
Curieux. I think this word describes me perfectly. As an expat, curiosity is your best friend. It helps you discover, adapt, and truly enjoy the journey.
10. How would you describe Paris in 3 words?
Talk. Play. Walk.
These three words capture not only the city but also the spirit of Absolutely French. They reflect learning, connection, and discovery, all essential parts of the expat experience.

Stay open. You’ll face surprises and challenges, but keeping an open mind makes the journey smoother and more rewarding.
