Meet Our Absolu of the Month!

1. Can you tell us about yourself and your expatriation journey to Paris? (What brought you here? How did you feel at the beginning?)
My name is Yulia, and I’m originally from Murmansk, Russia. After graduation I moved to Moscow together with my twin sister.
In November 2024 I relocated to Paris due to my husband’s promotion. This wasn’t my first expatriation – we had previously spent a year living in Dubai.
I was thrilled about moving to Paris. It had always been my dream. I’ve always felt a strong connection with France and French culture: I studied at the faculty of foreign languages with French as my first foreign language, I used to work for a French company and all of my former managers French and my husband is francophone.
The idea of navigating a new culture, language, and lifestyle was daunting. At first, I experienced a mix of excitement and overwhelm. I had visited Paris several times before and found it beautiful and inspiring – but being a tourist and living here are two completely different things.
Although I had few friends in Paris (former colleagues and university friends), I initially felt isolated and frustrated. Communication and social connection have been always important to me and gradually I began to explore the city more deeply, meet new people and build a new network.
2. Could you tell us more about your career journey? (Did you have to change career paths when moving to France? What challenges did you face?)
Back in Moscow, I worked as a Business Development Manager for a big French company. But moving to Paris meant putting my career on hold. Even though my French is quite strong, the job market today is challenging, and finding a good opportunity has proven to be tough.
Once I applied for a position and I received the following feedback: “ …Par ailleurs, le “career break” de 2 ans ne va pas non plus jouer en votre faveur pour vendre votre parcours aupres des companies” (the translation: “Moreover, the 2-year career break will also not work in your favor when trying to present your background to companies.”). The first reaction – “That’s it? This is the end?” Should I give up? But then I began to realize – it’s not me, it’s the system. There’s still a huge gap between companies management & HR and the reality of relocation.
It’s frustrating to see that many companies still don’t consider expat spouses and career breaks as a normal part of international mobility. And yet, this is the reality for so many talented, qualified people.
3. What were the biggest challenges you faced when settling in France? (Cultural differences, language barriers, administration…?)
The biggest challenge for me was adapting to the pace of life. Frankly speaking, I’m still getting used to it. I was really surprised by how long it takes to get an appointment with a medical specialist — sometimes 2 to 3 weeks! For me, that feels like such a long time. 😊 I was also surprised by how long it’s taking to receive my permis de séjour. I’ve been waiting for it since December 2024.
4. How has Absolutely French helped you integrate? (What was the most valuable aspect for you? Language, culture, networking?)
Absolutely French has been a game-changer for me! Their French courses, combined with cultural outings, really helped me feel at home in Paris. The most valuable part was the networking — connecting with other expat spouses through the Absolutely network gave me a real sense of community.
I also really enjoyed the practical workshops and events. At the beginning, I thought that it would be difficult – each class lasts 5 hours! But I was so impressed by their learning approach – we exchanged ideas with classmates, cooked together, explored Paris through “Stroll&Learn” – every class was full of fun, energy and positive vibes. I would like to sincerely thank Armelle, the founder of Absolutely French, and the whole team for this wonderful opportunity. It truly meant a lot to me.

5. What’s your favorite activity at Absolutely French? And why?
I enjoyed the entire learning process, but what I liked the most is “Stroll&Learn” because you learn French by discovering
interesting places and diving deeply into the French history and culture. I think it’s absolutely
amazing!
6. If you could give one piece of advice to a new Absolutely French student, what would it be?
If you are a new to French, don’t be shy – start speaking even if you make mistakes or you don’t like your pronunciation. You are in the right place and the teachers of Absolutely French are true professionals, so you are in good hands. Just practice and enjoy the process.
7. Do you have a favorite French word? And why?
Ma puce. I find it so cute and charming
8. How would you describe Paris in 3 words?
I suppose that the most popular words associated with Paris are croissant, wine and Tour Eiffel, but for me Paris is about architecture, mystery, romance.
9. What are your top 3 tips for expat partners moving to France? (Advice for adapting, making friends, or dealing with challenges?)
1. Learn the Language.
Language is key to integration in France. Even a basic level of French shows respect for the culture. and helps with everyday interactions (e.g. shopping, appointments, neighbors). If you have a chance – follow the classes at Absolutely French as it is Absolutely nice place with amazing atmosphere, beautiful people and skilled teachers.
2. Build a Social Circle.
Moving to another country can feel isolating, especially if you don’t have a job right away. Join local clubs, take a class (for example art, yoga, cooking), or get involved in volunteering — these are excellent ways to meet locals.
3. Be Patient and Curious
France has its own rhythm, rules, and ways of doing things — from bureaucracy to social etiquette. You’ll face challenges, and some days will feel frustrating. Instead of resisting, try to observe, ask questions, talk to people and laugh off mistakes. And remember, adapting takes time.

10. Do you have a quote or a mantra that you live by?
When I was a student and we had Latin classes I learnt a nice proverb “Debes, ergo potes” that means “You have to, therefore you can”. I loved it so much because it so true – it became my motto.
